The game is set in the 1960s
The UK, USA, Russia, France, and China all have extensive nuclear arsenals, the cold war is in full swing and the threat of an escalation to nuclear warfare has never been greater.
The evil SPECTRE organisation has had an internal power struggle which has resulted in previous mastermind Ernst Stavros Blofeld splitting from the organisation to form an unholy alliance with the communist regime of the USSR.
Blofelds former allies at Spectre have carried through a plan which caused the initial split with Blofeld - to retarget all nuclear warheads held by the worlds nuclear states, and unleash a worldwide nuclear holocaust on all major population centres and essential military installations - leaving SPECTRE as the major world power!
The plan designated DOOMSDAY uses satellite links placed in 5 cities which control the doomsday satellite which will has already executed the retarget sequence. Blofeld is working with his Russian masters to hijack the doomsday project and gain the weapons control capabilities for themselves. The west has learned of the plan from a double agent and know that neither SPECTRE nor the Russians can be allowed to succeed.
As the game begins the doomsday program is in the final countdown hours before fatal holocaust moment. Both MI6 and the KGB have mobilised all of there secret agents to find and control the satellite uplink terminals in the 5 key cities.. Blofeld is controlling the Russian KGB agents and the west has despatched their legendary agent 007 James Bond to lead their own quest to take control of the Doomsday system.
London, Moscow, Jakarta, Cape Town & Rio de Janeiro are awash with agents from MI6, the KGB, and their allies from the East and West all of them are trying to take control of the uplinks.
The vital program disks required for the uplink consoles are at large, all contained in secure cases. Some are in the control of SPECTRE agents others are in transit via drop points. MI6 and the KGB agents have used all means at there disposal to glean the codes required to open these cases, computer hackers on both sides have been working night and day to trace the information. SPECTRE have planted numerous red herrings and blind alleys in a bizarre game of hide & seek. In one bizarre incident the twisted SPECTRE even put some codes up as prizes in a poker tournament in the Casino Royale, attended by both Bond and Blofeld.
